Food contact materials

Before food is prepared and consumed, it comes into contact with many different materials during production, storage, transport and preservation. These food contact materials must not release any harmful substances to the food and must not change the taste, smell or consistency of the food. Examples of food contact materials are packaging, cutlery, crockery and containers.
