PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a large group of man-made chemicals. Because they barely break down in the environment, they are also known as ‘forever chemicals’. They are considered harmful to the environment and to health.
Since 12 August 2026, food contact packaging may no longer be placed on the market under the PPWR if it exceeds the following limits: 25 ppb for any single PFAS compound, 250 ppb for the sum of all detected PFAS and 50 ppm for total fluorine content. If the total fluorine content exceeds 50 ppm, it must be demonstrated whether the fluorine actually comes from PFAS.
